How many times have you started an ambitious fitness program only to get frustrated and give up? True fitness means integrating exercise into your lifestyle, so it’s important to choose a strategy that feels achievable. Finding an appropriate fitness plan will improve your mental and cardiovascular health, and walking provides additional mental health benefits from being outside. Walking 2000 miles in a year is easily doable for almost anyone. If you divide it out, that’s 5.5 miles a day, or a little over 10,000 steps.

Does this amount of walking seem like a lot? It really isn’t. If you walk to and from work and to run errands as much as possible, you’re already most of the way there. Incorporating a few short walks after meals should take you the rest of the way, so you can hit your step goals almost without realizing it. However, you will have to commit to walking every day. It will be fun, but walking in adverse weather conditions will be the biggest obstacle to meeting your goals. Preparing for the weather is the best way to make sure you stick to your plan!

Walking in the Winter

During the winter, you’re going to need to bundle up. A pair of men’s or women’s comfortable boots are essential for cold weather walking. In fact, this may be the most important thing. Walking quickly might help keep the rest of you warm, but your feet aren’t likely to feel the benefits, especially if there’s snow on the ground.

You should also make sure to wear layers with a lighter jacket under your heavy coat in case you get too warm from the exertion of walking. A hat, scarf, and gloves will also help you stay comfortable. Don’t forget warm, comfortable pants as well! Fleece-lined leggings or tights are great options for keeping you warm.

Walking in the Rain

Bringing an umbrella is a good start, but waterproof clothing is the key to walking in the rain. Make sure you have a good pair of rain boots to avoid uncomfortable wet shoes and socks. In addition, a light raincoat or poncho are great options for keeping you dry in the summer, while a warmer waterproof jacket will help in colder weather.

Walking in the Summer

In the blistering heat, you might not be thrilled with the idea of taking a walk. However, the benefits to your health will be worth it. Make sure to bring a water bottle and wear plenty of sunscreen to avoid dehydration and sunburns. A good pair of breathable tennis shoes will also help you stay comfortable as you walk and prevent your feet from sweating too much. If you add shorts or breathable leggings and a light T-shirt or tank top, you should be able to keep your body cool. Make sure to tie up your long hair as well!

While walking in spring and fall might sound more appealing than in winter or summer, the benefits to your health make walking year-round worthwhile. You may need to bring a change of clothes or shoes if you have a job with a less-than-practical dress code, but in the end, staying comfortable during your walk is essential to meeting your goals. Soon, getting your steps in might be the highlight of your day, so try setting a goal to walk 2000 miles this year!
