An Interview with Debbie Robson: Author

Sylvia: Hi Debbie, it is such a pleasure to interview you.  Please give our readers a brief introduction of yourself and a little about your book.

Debbie: Well, I appreciate the opportunity.  My name is Debbie Robson and I am the author of Tomaree and my latest book Crossing Paths: the BookCrossing Novel. I was born in the Mater Hospital in Sydney, Australia and grew up on the Northern Beaches. I have variously given birth to a son in South Wales, UK, a daughter in New South Wales, run an internet dating agency, made dream catchers and tested telephone lines. My poems and stories have been published here and overseas. I now live in Lake Macquarie and work in Newcastle.

Crossing Paths is a novel about love, literature and synchronicity inspired by the wonderful real life website www.bookcrossing.com  from the back cover: “In an endeavor to come to terms with her past, Jane Townsend travels overseas armed with eight BookCrossing books to releases in three different continents. But after crossing paths with Jeremy Braithwaite her life starts to unravel and it is up to several other BookCrossers to trace her movements through her virtual bookshelf and find her before it is too late.”

Sylvia: What inspired you to write your first book?

Debbie: It is a while since I have written my first book but I wanted to tackle themes that are still important to me – loss, identity, place and memory.  In my first published novel, Tomaree which is named after a small mountain at Port Stephens, I wanted  to raise awareness of the Australian GI war brides and  what  they gave up for love. In my latest novel Crossing Paths it was my aim to delve deeper into synchronicity, to look at it from many angles through my characters. The message in this book is that we are all connected.

Sylvia:  What an interesting concept for a book. Do you have any advice for other writers?

Debbie: My advice to other writers is to read, read, read.  I read a book a week and many of those books actually “feed” me as a writer. I would also recommend finding a good place and time to write – both are essential.

Sylvia:  Why should we buy your book?

Debbie: People should buy Crossing Paths to find out about the wonderful world of BookCrossing, to read about interesting characters and to find out how 52 books weave in and out of eight people’s lives.

Sylvia:  Is there a special place that you prefer when you write?

Debbie: At the moment my favorite place to write is a cafe called Tempest on my way to work. I get up early, stop there for 30-45 minutes and that’s when I do my real writing. At home in the evenings I do my research and networking.

Sylvia:  What is your POWER WORD? Why this word?

Debbie:  My power word is synchronicity. It is real and there’s no such thing as coincidence. I really believe that if you are heading in the right direction, the direction your life should be going, then you will have a lot of synchronicity crossing your path. My latest novel is not just about synchronicity, it’s about healing too.

Sylvia: That’s an interesting power word.  Debbie, this has been great. Thank you for your time. I enjoyed learning more about you and your book. Please let our readers know how to contact you.

Debbie: You are very welcome. See below.
