An Interview With Lucy Cleary: Author

Sylvia: Hi Lucy. So excited to interview you today! I am also happy to have you as a member of our community, National Association of Women on the Rise. Thank you so much for taking time with us to talk about your book. .  Please give our readers a brief introduction of yourself and a little about your book.

Lucy:  Thank you Sylvia. I am Lucy Cleary and a native Delawarean; I have lived in Germany, Savannah, Georgia and Washington, D.C. I am a wife, mother and grandmother. I have three adult daughters and three grandchildren. I presently reside in Delaware with her husband Don. I am a Christian and retired Housing Manager for the Wilmington Housing Authority. I am the proprietor of Mother’s Heart Day Care. I started my endeavor as a writer in 1992. “All I Had Was Your Birth Certificate. (and Memories That Remain” is my first book. It was my mother’s dream to find her missing daughter.

 

Sylvia: What inspired you to write your first book?

Lucy: My mother’s life experience was my inspiration for writing “All I Had Was Your Birth Certificate” (and Memories That Remain).  I watched all of this happen to my mother as I was growing up. That is why I wanted to share her life story with women everywhere who have struggled with the lost of children through death or abduction. On the other hand, even children who have runaway.

Sylvia: Very inspiring book. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to gasp?

Lucy: Yes there is. I want my readers to know that regardless of your circumstance, situation or even if the odds are stacked against you, you can come out ahead. Never give up hope.

Sylvia: Do you have any advice for other writers?

Lucy: Yes I do. I would encourage them to write down everything. Read as much as you can. Find a mentor that can help you analyze your writing style. Go for it. Pursue your dreams.

Sylvia: What marketing techniques have you used to sell your books and which ones have been most successful?

Lucy: I have sent out press releases to the News Journal and I have sent out introduction letters to bookstores and churches. I also created a blog on WordPress.com. I have an author center on Amazon.com. I can’t answer which technique is the most successful.

Sylvia: Why should we buy your book?

Lucy: You should buy my book because this is a true-life story that has a prevalent impact that affects our society today. It is a story that affects lives and changes and destroys families everywhere.

Sylvia: Is there a special place that you prefer when you write?

Lucy: Yes there is. My special writing space is in my dining room adjacent to a double window that has plenty of sunlight.

Sylvia: What projects are you presently working on?

Lucy: I am presently working on promoting and marketing my book. I have done some blogs, radio shows, and book signings.

Sylvia: What is your power word? Why this word?

Lucy: My power word is HOPE. Hope is expecting with confident that something will happen. When all looks dim and there is CHAOS all around you, hope will tell you that it is going to turn out all right.
