An Interview with Glendora Dvine: Author & Counselor

Sylvia: Welcome Glendora. Please give our readers an introduction of yourself and a little about your book.

Glendora:  Hi Sylvia. I have been a nationally accredited licensed counselor since 2007 in South Georgia and have always had a passion and drive to help others. I am the founder of Dvine Systems GA, a mental and behavioral health practice that has been in operation since 2010.

Since 2014, I have been providing Distant Counseling / Tele-mental Health services to clients as needed.  I am board certified in Tele-mental Health and provide training to fellow clinicians on the fundamentals and ethics of Tele-mental Health; which is approved by the Licensed Professional Counselors Association of Georgia.

Through Dvine Systems GA, I have become recognized for her passion in three primary areas:

  • Family safeguarding
  • Individuality growth
  • Telemental Health Awareness

Sylvia: What inspired you to write your first book?

Glendora:   Feeling as if we as a black community are not leaving a legacy due to broken communication and lack of education on how to use assertive communication.

Sylvia: Interesting! I agree that legacy personally and as a people should have it at top of mind; especially during this time of chaos in our Country. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Glendora:   We only have one life, so live it… don’t just exist!  If you are not living purposefully or intentionally, then you are merely existing.  Every relationship should help you evolve as a person and not just take up time in your life.  Understanding how to nurture our children through assertive communication is my way of breaking generational curses.

Sylvia: Wow, that is powerful! What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Glendora:  The hardest part was starting.  Telling myself that I am going to do it and never doing it.  I told myself I was going to write a book and for 3 years, I just talked.  However, when I started, there was no stopping me until my message was complete.  My goal was to create a behavioral therapy book parents could use in between sessions to help decrease the dysfunction of the family unit.

Sylvia: I believe starting is always the barrier we put in front of ourselves. How did you come up with the idea for this book?

Glendora:   I came up with the idea through my work.  I was getting families after families complaining that they had no one to talk to or no one understands them.  It was over and over, and I realized that adults really don’t know how to communicate to the younger generations.  They continue to use tactics that were used on them and those ways simple doesn’t work today.

Sylvia: How do you combat writer’s block?

Glendora:  I combat writer’s block by taking breaks.  I take mental breaks by scheduling them when I am starting to work.  I also will use my work time to work on other ideas or tools I may need for my book if I am not able to think of more words for my message at the time.

Sylvia: Do you have any advice for other writers?

Glendora:   Get started.  Your story is for someone else and it will help them heal and grow into their best life.  Your story has similarities that are going to help you not to feel alone.  You are purposeful and sharing your story is way to live intentional.

Sylvia: What marketing techniques have you used to sell your books and which ones have been most successful?

Glendora:  I have use this marketing technique that has been successful for selling my book, which is vending.  I partner up with others and vend at events.  I usually will set a limited to how much I will spend for the vending booth include that in my book price.  I also would have a drawing at the event that will include a book and other prizes. If you purchase a book you are entered to win.

Sylvia: Great idea for other writers struggling with marketing! Why should we buy your book?

Glendora: Parents should buy my book if they are searching for resources to help with parenting, or wanting to develop in their own personal growth.  My books are about self-preservation against negative relationships.

Sylvia: Is there a special place that you prefer when you write?

Glendora: I prefer to write in my sunroom that is shows a lot of nature.  I need it to be quiet and cozy.

Sylvia: What projects are you currently working on?

Glendora: I am currently working on creating a masterclass for mental health clinicians.  I train in the fundamentals and ethics of telemental health and starting your online private practice.

Sylvia: What is your POWER WORD? Why this word?

Glendora: My power word is STAY LIFTED! Because it is too easy to be down and negative.  We need to hear positive words from others more than ever now.  Staying lifted is implying keep your head up.  Too many times life gets difficult storms comes and we as humans question ourselves about every move we make.  We are our biggest problem with being happy.  I just want people to remember STAY LIFTED.

Sylvia: Thank you!

Glendora:  You are welcome
