Covering a person from head to toe, the skin is considered to be the largest organ in the body. It functions as the body’s first line of defense against outside elements. Despite the significant role it plays, it continues to be one of the body parts that are usually taken for granted.  Skin problems can happen when your body lacks the proper nutrition needed to maintain healthy skin cells.  Moreover, poor health can also manifest in the quality of a person’s skin.

To achieve great skin, one needs to start from within before working your way outside. We list down 5 simple but useful practices to help you nourish your skin.

Eat Right

Being the largest body organ, the skin is also the biggest recipient of whatever nutrients your body absorbs from the food you eat. Thus, it only makes sense to eat the right kind of food to get healthier looking skin. Fruits and vegetables are a must in your diet, and nutritionists recommend getting at least five portions a day. They contain powerful antioxidants that repair cellular damage caused by external factors like smoking, pollution, and sunlight. Healthy skin growth is also achieved by eating foods that are rich in Vitamin E such as almonds, avocado, hazelnuts, sunflower, and pine nuts. You can also avoid further skin damage by including more zinc into your diet. This mineral is usually found in fish, lean red meat, whole grains, poultry, and shellfish.

Hydrate as Often as Possible

One must drink a minimum of 8 glasses everyday especially during summer time in order to keep oneself properly hydrated. Dehydration causes the skin to dry up because it disrupts the normal function of the oil glands and skin cells. Water usually reaches other organs before the skin, and that’s why people who don’t drink plenty of water usually end up with dry and flaky skin. If you’re at the office or at work, set your alarm every hour to remind yourself to drink at least 1 glass of water.

Invest in Quality Skincare Products

Instead of hoarding expensive make-up to hide various skin flaws, you should consider finding appropriate products. You don’t need to wait until you’re 30 or 40 to take care of your skin. Experts say it is best to prepare your skin during your 20s and maintain it as you grow older. Quality and natural skincare products serve as the best kind of “skin food” you can give your body. Investing in skincare will also save you more money in the long run. Good skincare products provide you with radiant-looking skin that doesn’t need too much cover-up.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Getting proper sleep also helps you achieve good-looking skin. Sleeping gives your skin appropriate time to rest and repair itself. It is the best time for your skin cells to regenerate because it is not exposed to the damaging effects of sunlight, pollution, and dirt. Sleeping also provides your skin much-needed break from your hands’ constant touching, giving it time to breathe and restore itself.

Sweat It Out

Exercise is not only good for the heart, it also benefits the skin. Increased blood flow helps carry oxygen and nutrients effectively throughout the body. A healthy blood flow also provides a regular means of carrying out waste products from your body. An active lifestyle also lessens a person’s stress, eliminating possible skin problems that may arise from it such as acne and eczema. Exercise also leads to better-toned and firmer muscles, giving your skin that supple and more flexible appearance.

You can’t expect to have that desired youthful glow if you continuously take your skin for granted. Expensive make-up and other non-permanent cover-ups may hide your skin flaws temporarily, but they do nothing to improve its condition. The only way to achieve great skin is to nourish and take care of it. By eating right, hydrating, exercising, getting enough rest, and investing in the proper skincare products, one can finally experience great-looking and healthy skin.
