Windows are an important style feature in any home, but the type of window covering chosen can impact how energy efficient the home is, as well as getting new energy efficient windows from Newton roofers. Many types of fashionable window coverings save energy by preventing both cold and hot air from entering the home. While windows should be tight enough to prevent air infiltration, most do allow some of the outdoor air to invade the interior. Window coverings can provide the extra layer of insulation needed to create a comfortable environment within the home.

Insulated Drapery or Thermal Curtains

When a cold wind is blowing outside, homeowners may long for a cozy blanket to chase away the chill, and thermal curtain or insulated drapes can do the same thing for their windows. These double layer window treatments can have a dual purpose since they are sometimes used to darken a bedroom for people who need to sleep during the daytime.

Blinds of Varying Types

Several types of insulating blinds are available with honeycomb blinds being very popular. These blinds are constructed with vertical pockets that open up to provide insulating air space when they are in use. The pockets flatten when the blinds are drawn up, so they are attractive and take very little space. Honeycomb shades are available in fashionable fabrics that add to the decor of the room. Wooden or vinyl blinds are not necessarily insulating, but they do provide a draft barrier between the window and the interior space of the home. A window fitted with blinds may also have decorative curtains that can be tied back, or valances may simply be installed at the top of the window.

Interior and Exterior Shutters

Plantation shutters originated in the southern states to provide shade without blocking cross-ventilation in the home. These shutters are installed on the inside of a window which makes them easy to adjust as needed. Modern air conditioning is used in most homes these days, but these attractive wooden shutters still make a great fashion statement today. Exterior shutters are more useful as a security measure, but they also offer an extra layer of protection from cold and heat. The obvious disadvantage of exterior shutters is that they must be opened or closed from the outside.

Window Shades

Most people think of a window shade as a way to provide privacy or to prevent the sun from overheating a room. Innovative changes has been made to window shades that are highly effective at lowering energy costs within the home. Although the typical window shade is probably more effective at blocking out solar heat, they also offer an extra barrier between window glass and the interior of a room.

Window Coverings and Quilts

Window quilts are a relatively new shade that effectively prevents air from filtering in around a window. The quilt is similar to a regular shade that is installed at the top of the window frame. The rolled edge of the quilt fits into channels on either side of the window to completely block any cold drafts. Window quilts are used mostly at night since any view from the window is completely blocked when they are down.

Window Film

Many people are unaware they can save energy costs by installing film on their windows. This special film protects against solar heat without obstructing the view to the outdoors. The film prevents glass from shattering if it is broken, and also prevents ultraviolet rays from fading upholstery and carpet.

Everyone loves natural light in their home, and modern window treatments make it possible to enjoy that open feeling without sacrificing energy efficiency. With so many options for energy saving window fashions, saving energy can be beautiful too.
