An Interview with Yma Orne Campbell: Author, Writer, Educator, Speaker & Poet

Sylvia: Welcome Yma. Please give our readers an introduction of yourself and a little about your book.

Yma:  Hello Sylvia. My name is Yma Orné Campbell and I am back with a new inspirational book, “The Priceless Gift Surviving Cancer.” In my latest book, I depict the details about a sudden brief battle with thyroid cancer. I share my inside experience and provide a thorough explanation of how I went through it and found humility through my experience and healing. This book is one of my most humble pieces of work ever.

I am a native of Brooklyn, New York. My love for writing dates back since I can remember as a child. I credit my love of writing to the stimulation that I received in my 9th grade English class. I have written stories, and poems, many of which I have shared with others.

Sylvia: I want to commend you on fighting and winning your battle with cancer. So many people go thru some form of cancer. Thank you for sharing this with us. What inspired you to write your first book?

Yma: I wrote my first book (Tragedy and Loss: A Family Struggles to Move on) after losing my younger brother at the age of twenty in a car accident.

Sylvia: Wow, my heart goes out to you. I, unfortunately, loss my dear sister years ago at the age of 15. It was such a big loss in my life. So, I truly understand. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Yma: Yes! Thyroid Cancer is a cancer that is seen in many groups of people today. There is no specific age or gender and everyone needs to get checked. September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month!

Sylvia: What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Yma: The hardest part for me writing my book was going through all the details and reading them over again. I was reminded of how painful of a time that was for me but I was also reminded of how blessed I am to be here and alive today! I made it through by the Grace of God.

Sylvia: Yes, you made it! That’s the beauty of faith and God’s grace intertwined. So glad you are telling your story about it. This book will help many people. How did you come up with the idea for this book?

Yma: During the time that I was going back and forth to the Cancer Center, I thought of the idea as being a good one because people are uninformed about Thyroid Cancer and knowledge is power.

Sylvia: How do you combat writer’s block?

Yma: Whenever I get writer’s block, I always take a break from the project that I am working on. A break could be a few minutes, a few weeks, a few months, or maybe even a year. Writer’s Block for me is a moment of rest. I utilize that time to regather my thoughts. Sometimes my writing will go in another direction and then there are times when I can pick up from where I left off and keep my thoughts flowing after that period of rest.

Sylvia: Do you have any advice for other writers?

Yma: Embrace your pen or pencil or computer whichever you prefer. Allow your thoughts to flow and map out your ideas. Keep a Thesaurus and a Dictionary on hand always. Never be afraid to start over from the beginning if necessary.

Sylvia: Awesome advice, thank you! What marketing techniques have you used to sell your books and which ones have been most successful?

Yma: I have utilized social media and I previously utilized the services of a publicist in the past. I find the social media is very successful because everyone is utilizing it.

Sylvia: Why should we buy your book?

Yma: My book is filled with need-to-know information and it creates awareness for everyone regarding Thyroid Cancer.

Sylvia: Is there a special place that you prefer when you write?

Yma: Yes definitely! I prefer a window with a view of greenery, flowers, and trees. I prefer a place that is warm, and quiet but one that I can gather a sense of peace and tranquility.

Sylvia: Sounds inviting. What projects are you currently working on?

Yma: I am currently putting together a stationary/greeting card line and I am working on a drama series in between that time.

Sylvia: What is your POWER WORD? Why this word?

Yma: My POWER WORD is CHANGE. Change is everything to me. It requires little effort but in each baby step, it produces big results. Doing this interview required change. It was a change in the way that I would normally do things but if I keep doing new things because of change, then greater things will happen in return.

Sylvia: Love your power word! Well, thank you Yma for sharing  your message of hope and healing!  Please share your social media and book contact information.
