An Interview with Kathryn Primm: Veterinarian & Author
Sylvia: Hello Kathryn. Welcome! Please give our readers an introduction of yourself and a little about your book.
Kathryn: Hello Sylvia. Thank you for taking the time to interview me. I am a small animal veterinarian in Tennessee. It is the best job in the world for me. I get to meet pets and their people. I get to see firsthand what a blessing animals are to us. My book shows stories that really happened and how interesting the relationships are between pets and people. I choose to believe that they make us more human and show us how to be better. Nothing feels better than the warmth of love between friends. To be able to help preserve that relationship through good health is also a gift.
Sylvia: I can feel the passion in your words about your work. In addition, it is interesting that you say ‘pets and their people’ as its normally people and their pets. What inspired you to write your first book?
Kathryn: I love to tell stories and explain things in vivid detail. I had always wanted to write a book about my experiences here, but I started small with a blog. People really seemed to like it and suggested that I compile the stories into book form. Because I have always wanted to be a vet, I feel that this is what my contribution is all about.
Sylvia: That’s a great takeaway for readers. Take baby steps… start a blog as it helps to build your credibility and allow you to establish a following. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Kathryn: Realize that blessings come in all forms. You might be praying for a blessing and not see that there is one lying on your couch with you.
Sylvia: Do you have any advice for other writers?
Kathryn: If you have a passion, share it. Others will feel your passion and be inspired.
Sylvia: I agree with you in that your passion can be an inspiration to others. What marketing techniques have you used to sell your books and which ones have been most successful?
Kathryn: I have done a lot of social media, written guest blogs, radio and local TV, book signings, etc. The biggest days were probably when Dr. Marty Becker posted about my book on his Facebook page (he has a very large following) and also when I took my books to a Humane Society benefit. My marketing efforts have been more intense because I am donating the proceeds above the costs to local animal rescues and I feel very driven to make sales.
Sylvia: How thoughtful! Your drive is a blessing to those organizations. Why should we buy your book?
Kathryn: If you love animals or have ever wondered what it is like behind the scenes at an animal hospital, you will like my book. Since the proceeds for the first year are donated, you can feel twice as good!
Sylvia: Is there a special place that you prefer when you write?
Kathryn: I love to voice dictate into my iPad, so I can be anywhere. I love being outside, but usually I wake up in the very early mornings or the middle of the night with ideas and I can grab my iPad and start writing. Fortunately, my husband is a very sound sleeper!
Sylvia: How funny! I’ve gotten up out of bed many nights with ideas. My husband not only sleeps sound, but snores as well, so I can be hammering a nail in the wall and it wouldn’t disturb him. What projects are you currently working on?
Kathryn: Tennessee Tails was a venture into the world of publishing and some of the reviews said that they wished it was longer or they wanted more, so I am currently working on a longer compilation. It is written but just starting revisions. I have learned so much from Tennessee Tails that my journey must continue.
Sylvia: What is your POWER WORD? Why this word?
Kathryn: EMOTION. I think that my power word is emotion. People have said that my book made them laugh and cry and that makes me feel really good. I think emotion is what makes us human. To be able to FEEL is what makes life worth living.
Sylvia: That is a powerful word as it is a part of our being! Please take a moment and share your contact information with my readers.
Kathryn: Thanks again Sylvia. I appreciate your commitment to authors.
