How can we grow our businesses and dreams with so much negativity running around these days? No one seems to have anything good to say about the economy, corporations, politicians, government, or the future of America. Life is stalled.

In an environment like this, it’s easy — too easy– to succumb to negativity rather than overcoming it. Here’s a way to quickly swim past the negativity:

  1. Grab a piece of paper or yellow legal pad.
  2. Make a list of the key people in your life: coworkers, mate, children, family, friends.
  3. Jot down 3 things you “like” about each person.
  4. Next, write down 3 things you did “right” today. No appreciation exercise is complete without appreciation for you, too.

Now, get ready to be asked why you’re so positive while everyone else is so negative. It will happen!

Wait — it gets even better. You’ll start receiving compliments for your efforts, at home and at work. They may come from someone who almost never compliments you. An out-of-the-blue sale may land on your desk. That proposal or project you’ve been struggling with will suddenly wrap itself up, and it will turn out better than you thought it would. Other ideas and opportunities will crop up, and if you continue doing this exercise, you’ll find that your income has increased. For what you appreciate grows.
