In today’s media-savvy, constantly connected world, it is an inescapable fact that your outward sense of style will influence what others think of your personal and professional qualities. Revamping your personal brand can have a huge impact on your professional life. When was the last time you seriously considered how your appearance reflects the way you want to be perceived in the world?

Refine Your Brand

A personal brand is not only your appearance, it also consists of your work ethic, your relationships, and your behavior. Your brand is reflected in all of these, but your appearance and choice of clothing is usually the first impression you make, and the most lasting. Luckily, it is also the easiest to update. Begin by asking yourself, how would you like others to view you?

Create Your Style

Come up with a list of words that you want to define you, whether they currently apply or not. Are you trendy, chic, classy, sassy, flirtatious, conservative, or professional? If you want to be an actress, then your list should be different from someone who wants to be a financial professional. Then ask yourself if you believe that others in fact would describe you with the words on your list. Even more importantly, ask those closest to you whether they agree with your assessment. If you think of yourself as hip and fresh and your friends don’t agree, then it’s time to update.

Develop Your Wardrobe

Does your current wardrobe match your list of adjectives? If it does, great! If not, we can fix that. Once you have this list, go to your wardrobe and take a critical look. Each piece of clothing should reflect something from your list, though not necessarily by itself. Does it pair with anything else in your wardrobe to create a cohesive appearance? Quantity does not necessarily mean quality.

Consider how each piece of clothing looks on you personally. Not every trend fits every body shape. Being in touch with your body and knowing what fits you will differentiate you from the crowd. An image consultant who holds a Kent State University Master’s in PR says to consider all aspects of an outfit, from the color and pattern to the fabric and cut. Once you know which colors and shapes best compliment your body, you can really have fun with accessorizing to create your truly unforgettable look.

Regardless of your career aspirations, your personal brand should be unique and authentic to your individual self. Your personal brand is all about being the presence you want to see in the world.
