An Interview with Stylicia Bowden: Author, Poet & Inspirational Speaker

“I will never be defined by someone else interpretation of my success because I am the shaping factor of what my success will be.”

Sylvia: Stylicia, Welcome! Please tell us a little about yourself?

Stylicia: Sylvia, thank you.  I am an author, poet and inspirational speaker and CEO & Founder of The Writer’s Block. I am a native of Detroit, Michigan but currently reside in Charleston, SC. I began to write short stories, poems, plays, songs and much more at the age of eight years old. After graduating from high school I went to college for a year and made a decision to join the military at the age of 19 years old. I served in the US Navy for nine consecutive years. However, before I departed from the military my passion for writing resurfaced and I completed 3 self published poetry books within a 1 year time period. In 2008, my journey in the military came to an abrupt halt because it was time for me to step out and live my dream. On June 24, 2008 I obtained my business license for my company entitled The Writer’s Block. The Writer’s Block is a company used to assist aspiring writing in their self publishing journey teaching writers that is more than just writing a book. My desire is to be a vessel to show people if you have a passion for something step out of your comfort zone and launch out into the deep.

The Princess Within: The Soul Of A Woman is my second poetry book self published in October 29, 2007. The Princess Within : The Soul Of A Woman is a compilation of poems reflecting a mirage of a woman’s heart, soul and mind. As you turn the pages you will visualize the journey of each poem from love to pain to renewing the soul. This book uncovers the mask that many women wear connecting to their pain, abuse and low self-esteem on the inside. The Princess Within encourages every woman to discard their mask and get to the root of what lies in their soul.

Sylvia: We have a few things in common.  I was raised in Detroit… of course that was many moons ago.  I also served my country by joining the USAR in the mid 80’s.  So, thank you for your dedication to our country. What inspired to write your first book?

Stylicia: You are welcome and thank you as well.  The Princess Within: The Soul Of A Woman which is my second poetry book was inspired by my own personal ups and downs through my journey of womanhood. It also was inspired by other women personal stories. The book is a depiction of pain from abuse to low self esteem to understanding our worth. I went through the emotional, mental, physical and verbal abuse in many relationships and it tore down my self esteem. However, I had to learn why I was attracting the same man over and over again but I had to understand it was something on the inside of me that needed to change. The journey of this book helps a woman understand her self- worth.  I believe women settle for less because they do not understand the diamond they are handcrafted to be in life.

Sylvia: Is there a message in the book that you want readers to grasp?

Stylicia: The main message I have to offer in my poetry book is for women to understand your worth. No one can tell you who you are as a woman you have to be willing to be real with your inner self and discard the mask. Women wear many mask and pretend everything is ok but deep down inside there are weeds needing to be pulled up from past pains.

Sylvia: Do you have advice for other writers?

Stylicia: When you write a book understand that anyone can wri te a book but the most important thing is you understanding your target audience. If you understand your target audience and their demographics then you can begin to know how to market to them. However, this process should be done 6 months in advance before your book is done. There are many things needed to make your book a success.

Sylvia: Why should we buy the book?

Stylicia: The main reason you should buy my book is because I am writing about a subject I am familiar with because I have endured the pains of not knowing my self- worth. There are many books people write due to their research but the best research to make a book a success is by pulling from your own personal experiences.

Sylvia: Stylicia, I commend you on your work as a writer.  I wish you all the best. Thanks so much for taking the time for the interview.
