An Interview with Nancy Kaiser: Author & Entrepreneur

Sylvia: Hi Nancy, it is such a pleasure to interview you.  Please give our readers a brief introduction of yourself and a little about your book.

Nancy:  Hi Sylvia. I was born with an innate love of animals, especially horses. I grew up riding, training, and showing horses in New Jersey. I graduated from Rutgers College of Pharmacy and practiced for several years before marrying my horse vet and leaving pharmacy to manage our equine hospital and breeding farm for 27 years.

I live in the healing Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina surrounded by my family of two Labs and Swedish Warm blood horse. I operate “Just Ask” Communications, a practice devoted to healing the human-animal bond through enhanced communication and understanding. My abilities in telepathic animal communication and healing emerged while managing an equine veterinary hospital for 27 years.

I am an award- winning author of two books, Letting Go: An Ordinary Woman’s Extraordinary Journey of Healing & Transformation and Tales of Animal Communicator ~ Master Teachers.

Sylvia: What inspired you to write your first book?

Nancy: I was inspired to write my first book, “Letting Go: An Ordinary Woman’s Extraordinary Journey of Healing & Transformation” by my friends after I shared portions of a personal journal with them. I began to journal after I moved from my horse farm in central New Jersey to the mountains of North Carolina with my horse vet husband of almost 30 years. Six weeks into construction of our retirement home, he walked out. I found myself 600 miles from everyone I knew without a home or a job. I began to journal in order to learn how and why I was living alone in the mountains with my dogs, cats, and horse. My friends felt I needed to turn my journal into a book to help others, who were facing traumatic life challenges to help them learn from their struggles more quickly & easily. Once our lessons are learned, we can let go of our pain and move forward with grace.

Writing my journal healed me from the worst time in my life and allowed me to write the book I always knew I’d write one day. “Tales of Animal Communicator ~ Master Teachers,” the first in a series, was released in October 2011. It shares the lives and lessons of the filly foal who taught me I was supposed to be an animal communicator and healer as well as my personal animals. I believe Tales will broaden people’s perspectives on the significance of their animals in their lives while helping them develop more meaningful relationships with not only their animals, but all animals. I’ve created a companion CD or MP3 download called Gifts from the Universe, which contains two releasing exercises that form the last chapter of Tales. These processes are extremely effective in helping us embrace the intense level of change that is occurring at this time.

A portion of the proceeds from the sales of Tales will be donated to my local Humane Society, Noah’s Wish, and The Wild Horse Sanctuary in California. The next in this series will be Tales of an Animal Communicator – Being a Clear Voice. It will chronicle all the lessons learned from my clients’ animals over the past almost 20 years.

Sylvia: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Nancy:  The message I hope that Letting Go shares is that you can and will survive even the most horrible of life’s challenges. And, you will probably learn more about yourself during your recovery than at any other time in your life. I want Letting Go to inspire and encourage people who feel like unwanted change is going to end their life. It isn’t! Change is a constant in life that we need to embrace. I have a quote in Letting Go that sums up unexpected change – sometimes on the way to a dream; you get lost and find a better one!

Tales offers a message of curiosity, wonder, and unlimited possibilities to people regarding the animals in their lives. There is so much the animals have come to teach us as well as learn from us. Some of their greatest lessons contained in Tales concern reincarnation, living in the moment, unconditional love, just to name a few. Our animals are waiting to enrich our lives in more ways than we can imagine. Tales shares a broader understanding of the significance of animals to our lives.

Sylvia: Do you have any advice for other writers?

Nancy:  Write for the “right” reasons for you. Write from your heart. Publish to contribute something of value to others not just to earn money. Surround yourself with professionals that respect your opinion regardless of your inexperience. Be open to constructive criticism and be willing to explore new possibilities and options. Remain true to your purpose and know that your heart knows best. Even if you never publish, the act of writing alone may be all you need. Writing healed me; publishing didn’t. But, know that the first time you hold your own book is magical and enormously satisfying. Each time you hear how your words have helped another, your heart warms and you smile. Those are the moments you’ll remember long after any money you’ve earned is spent.

Sylvia: What marketing techniques have you used to sell your books and which ones have been most successful?

Nancy:  Selling is not my forte. I’m just not a promoter. I’ve attended book-signing events with my local writers group. I’ve sold books at a couple of stores in town as well. I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time online creating a “presence” for my communication and healing work and my books. The most success I had was at a Grand Opening Celebration for my local Humane Society’s new complex. Giving an hour presentation about communication and healing at a client’s pet store was the next most successful technique. I am very passionate about my books and my work with the animals. Learning from my past experiences has taught me that I need to concentrate on my target market. By offering a short presentation, the passion for my life with the animals will sell books. I am convinced of that. Personally, I need to create positive selling experiences or my disappointment creeps in.

Sylvia: Why should we buy your book?

Nancy:  You should buy Letting Go if you have suffered a sudden and unexpected loss or if you’re struggling with negative emotions that are influencing your life. Until you learn the lessons your pain has come to teach you, you won’t be able to let it go. Letting Go can help you recognize the lessons your soul is trying to show you, so you can embrace them, release the pain, and move forward and find happiness again.

If you’re an animal-lover or know one, Tales will really show you what part animals are waiting to play in your life. During a consultation session years ago, I was “told” that companion animals came into existence to answer our souls cries for help, because life on Earth is so difficult. The animals in people’s lives have come to them for a reason. Tales will help people recognize the deeper purpose of the animals in their lives.

Sylvia: Is there a special place that you prefer when you write?

Nancy:  I write in my office looking out at the woods that surround my house. Having spent most of my life outside on a horse farm, this new lifestyle is vastly different. Being able to look at Nature helps me cope with a life that is more inside than out now.

Sylvia: What projects are you currently working on?

Nancy:  Besides marketing Tales, I write a monthly column for Stable Woman Gazzette.com called Horse Tales & Teachers. I also write articles for opportunities that arise from my tine spent online. When the timing feels right, I will begin to work on Tales Two, but I don’t have any plans for that in the near future.

Sylvia: What is your POWER WORD?  Why this word?

Nancy:  BELIEVE!  When I started on my path to be an animal communicator and healer, I was the biggest skeptic. After all, I worked as a pharmacist until I marred my horse vet. When I began communicating I needed lots of physical proof that something was happening. The animals, who I trusted, gave me more than enough. As each new healing modality came into my awareness, it was the same thing – lots of proof. Over the years, I have had many animals teach me to trust in myself; believe in myself. I am humbled to have facilitated and observed miracles, many of which are shared in Tales. Now, not only do I believe in miracles, I expect them. Without belief, we will create nothing. What we believe dictates what kind of life we create. Believe in unlimited possibilities and you will have them. Believe in miracles and you will experience them.

Sylvia:  Who was your greatest Master Teacher?

Nancy:  To pick one out of all the amazing animals that have shared their lives with me is incredibly difficult. I simply can’t. I have two that have touched my life in profound ways. The first is the Quarter Horse filly foal, Because Of Love, who showed me what my life’s purpose was. Love’s story begins Tales because without her I may never have discovered my true path as an animal communicator and healer. Although she only lived for four short months, Love changed my life forever. I will never be able to thank her enough. Love’s soul has actually been waiting since 1993 for her story to be told.

The second is my dear mare, Squiggles, who was born in 1985. Squiggles stayed with me for 17 years and not only taught me more than most, but she also gave me three colts, who became master teachers for me as well. Prior to my uncovering my communication skills, Squiggles almost died three separate times. Each time, I learned significant lessons about her will to live and strong determination. Squiggles’ and her colts’ lives are chronicled throughout Tales. I have a beautiful painting of her and her second colt, Randy, that hangs next to my bed. I look in those eyes every day and feel grateful that they chose me to be their person.
