This Chinese Proverb resonates with me.  Truly, it is more valuable than any amount of money or material items.  Our health dictates every decision we make each and every day.  Now we know that as we age, our good health helps us with stability, independence, vitality, longevity and self confidence.   We are Professionals, Mothers, Daughters, Wives, Partners, we are naturally, care takers.   Too often, we forget how to care for ourselves.  Invest in your health with the following 3 tips and what you will notice is increased energy and a sense of well being.

  • Eat a high quality breakfast each and every day.  Your blood sugar control dictates everything from decision making to fat storage.  Eggs and avocado, a smoothie, or cottage cheese are all fabulous choices for a successful brain boost.  Cereals are a poor choice as they only spike your blood sugar leaving you hungry and consequently, tired.  Protein and fat will not only sustain blood sugar but feed your brain on a neurotransmittor level as well.  With this tip, it is important to eat 3 quality meals daily.  Some recommend 5 mini meals.  This can be time consuming and difficult, and not particularly healthy when we’re discussing insulin.  Many blood sugar and diabetes experts recommend the 3 solid meals to control the out put of insulin thereby controlling appetite through blood sugar regulation and  protecting the pancreas.  When one is eating enough natural fats, they don’t need to continuously snack or think about eating.  When you think diet, don’t think “lowfat” rather think of “real food”.  Processed foods are empty foods.

Treat yourself to some form of exercise.  Open the lungs and breath deep.  We have a tendency to “clam up” during times of stress.  It is our opportunity to make excuses for not allowing ourselves this valuable form of stress relief without realizing how helpful it truly is.   Take a brisk walk, turn up the music and dance for 10 minutes, stand up at your desk and do some deep breathing and stretching.  It is amazing what clarity you can obtain in 60 seconds.  Hours of cardio have been proven wasteful and degrading to the body.  Elevating the heart rate and 2 days of some sort of toning with weights will provide tremendous benefit to your over all health and appearance.

You hear this one often but it is imperative that you adhere to this very important health rule.  Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep per night.  If you’re one who claims to get by on 5-6 hours of sleep, you are depriving yourself.  This is the body’s repair period.  Your cells are regenerating, your immune system is cleaning house and if you’re not sleeping well, your immune system and other bodily systems are compromised only to leave you feeling sluggish and consequently, subject to illness.  If you are having trouble sleeping, you might need a melatonin supplement.  Our body can become depleted with stress and poor eating habits.  The amount of melatonin the body secretes tends to decline with age, a possible link with an age-related rise in difficulty sleeping.  Don’t expect miracles, it can take a couple of weeks for a supplement such as this to begin working well.  It is not a narcotic but a natural substance the body makes so you won’t feel groggy, you’ll feel energized in the morning!

Follow these three steps for 21 days and it will become habit for you.  To eat well is to feel well!

In good health
