Woman with facial creme

We all have our favorite lotions and potions, from BB creams to night creams, primers, serums and now … facial mists? What’s going on that all of the sudden we have yet another genre of beauty products to spend our hard-earned funds on? Facial mists are booming and they’re only going to get more popular as we transcend into spring and summer. Trust this once-skeptical girl when I say you need to embrace this trend and find a facial mist to include in your daily routine. A powerhouse of beauty potential, a facial mist not only sets your makeup, it also helps calm, hydrate and replenish dry or irritated skin. It even adds a radiant glow throughout the day. They are lifesavers that can take you from looking tired and lackluster to bright and dewy in seconds. Oh, and they just happen to be travel-friendly as well.

Isn’t it just overpriced water?

The concept of facial mists isn’t new but the technology has advanced to where it’s not just water that’s in the products. Some of the products contain serum, multivitamins, aloe and essential oils. Mists are also an easy way to improve radiance of your skin. “The moisturizing qualities of mists help improve dry, flaky skin. Some products even claim anti-aging properties, with improvement of wrinkles and fine lines,” says Dr. Gary Goldenberg of Goldenberg Dermatology.

Why do we love them?

“I love using them to set my makeup or refresh my look throughout the day,” says Sarah Conley of StyleItOnline.com. Conley’s favorites: MAC’s Mineralize Charged Water and Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray. “MAC’s Mineralize Charged Water has added moisture, so it’s great for the dryer winter months. Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray is packed with aloe, herbs, and rosewater, making it a great choice year round (plus it’s super-affordable at only $7),” she says. Another perk: If you were a little heavy handed on the powder this morning, these mists will fix it fast, and keep your makeup from settling into fine lines and wrinkles. “This is one of my favorite skincare boosters!” says Christina Farrell of TheMakeUpBlogger.com. A good facial mist can keep your makeup glowing throughout the day, and help to keep your skin hydrated. If you have oily skin, facial mists can help balance out your oil production, and keep your skin feeling fresh. I personally prefer mists that include essential oils, such as calming lavender or rose. Christina’s personal faves include Mario Badescu Facial Rose Spray and Jurlique Facial Mists.

What should we look for?

Kate McCarthy, glominerals National Makeup Artist recommends a facial mist that contains both hyaluronic acid and water labeled as deep water, heavy water or D2O. “Deep water is 10 percent heavier than normal water, so it will sink into the skin instead of evaporate,” she explains. “Also, hyaluronic acid can hold 1,000 times its weight in water, so once it is delivered into the skin via deep water, you get a big gulp of water for your skin.” Kate recommends glominerals Revive Hydration Mist. Not only does it have those two hero ingredients, it is packed with rosemary and lavender for an invigorating scent that will keep you alert and awake. Not all mists will have the same ingredients and will feel the same. Some of it is trial and error. Some mists contain only water and minerals, and are designed to refresh and freshen up the skin. Others will have essential oils, vitamins, serum, and aloe, and may help with anti-aging and overall improvement of skin quality. All of these can be used to set your makeup and hydrate the skin.  I recommend looking for a mist that offers hydration, a blissful aroma-therapeutic sensation, and packs an antioxidant punch.

What type of skin are facial mists best for?

Facials mists can be used on all skin types. The hydrating products are best for those with dry skin. Products with vitamins and minerals can be useful for those who want to hydrate and improve the overall appearance of the skin. If you haven’t tried facials mists, try them. You may get hooked. The products are easy to apply and there are many options out there, so you are sure to find one that works for you.
