You are solely responsible for the direction of your business whether it is forward or backward. Everyone wants to use the economy as his or her personal scapegoat. Let’s delete the economy from the equation. Where are YOU driving your business? Downhill? Uphill? In a ditch? In circles? Are you sleep at the wheel? Pay attention, sleeping at the wheel can be dangerous to your health AND your business!
Is your “check engine light” on? When is last time you took stock of your business goals, measured your marketing efforts or analyzed your ROI for your expenses? Your daily business activities should consistently bring you closer to achieving your business goals, mission and purpose. What is your purpose? Has it changed? Don’t ignore this warning. When the “check engine light” comes on it means unless you stop, check your vehicle (business) out and make some adjustments you will end up on the side of the road.
Watch out for slow traffic on the right. Are you letting others weigh you down with negativity about the economy? Are you constantly hearing you can’t do this or can’t do that? Tired of reading about slow sales and tied up purse strings? Well, what are you prepared to do about it? You have two choices: Go around or stay behind. Get creative. Conjure up your ingenuity Think outside of the box. Go against the grain. Don’t wait for things to be better or perfect. Do something. Take ACTION. Take a little educated risk and put your best foot forward. Put the naysayers behind you.
Make a turn in the right direction. You can’t control the economy, but you can control the direction of your business. Far too many small business owners know what they need to do, but fail to do it. Why is that? It is almost like the proverbial dog that ate the homework; any excuse will do. There are good business habits and sound choices you’ve made in the past that you fail to do now. You have sacrificed progress, productivity and focus for complacency, spinning your wheels and “doing just enough.” Just where the heck are you? Where should you be?
Enough already with all the conflicting projections. Enough already with the watching and waiting. Enough already with letting others put limits on your business capacity and telling you don’t expect this and don’t expect that. Look around you. There are businesses that are THRIVING! Why shouldn’t yours be too? Put some gas in your tank and rev that engine. Rev it LOUD. Heck, you can even toot your horn!
Get your map out. Get a plan together. Get help. Stay awake!
