Are you ready to be a leader in your company? If you are, here are some tips to fast forward your career and gain a position in upper management.

Step up: If you want to get noticed, you need to get serious and step up your game. Take on extra projects or clients, help your coworkers when they are in a bind, and be helpful to your boss. Try coming in to work earlier or staying later then you usually do. When you are at work, make sure you are staying on task. Become the person in your company that people think of when they need something done right. If you can start to stand out for your excellence and hard work, your superiors will start to notice.

Make it known you want to move up: If you are really serious about moving into upper management, you need to be direct. Set up a meeting with your immediate boss and tell them that you are interested in moving up in your company. You may want to ask them tips on how to become eligible for a promotion. Hopefully, they will take the time to give you some ideas on how to get noticed by your superiors.

Develop the skills of a leader: If you want a job in upper management, you need to acquire the skills of a leader. Read books and articles on leadership. Study the leaders and history of your company. Also, think about great leaders in your field that you admire. What skills do these leaders have that are most important to you? Start to put some of these ideas into action in your own position and show your company that you are ready for more responsibility.

Get a (higher) education: If you look at positions in upper management and you notice that several team members hold an advanced degree, it may be time for you to do the same. You may want to think about getting a master’s degree in organizational development. This master’s program will give you the tools you need to become a leader in your field and move up to the next level in your career. If an upper management position becomes available in your company, having the extra edge of a master’s degree can make a difference in a getting promoted.
