An Interview with Catherine Green: Freelance Writer & Author

Sylvia: Hi Catherine, it is such a pleasure to interview you.  Please give our readers a brief introduction of yourself and a little about your book.

Catherine: Thank you Sylvia. My name is Catherine Green; I am 29 years old and live in South Cheshire, England. My debut paranormal romance novel is called Love Hurts. It is about a young woman who runs a bookshop in Cornwall with her best friend. She falls in love with a local police detective and later discovers that he is a vampire, and that his identical twin brother is a werewolf. She is dragged into their complicated and dangerous lives, to her detriment, where secrets are told and lives are lost…

I also have short stories published in two Young Adult anthologies. The first book is called Devils, Demons and Werewolves, and my vampire story is called The Teen Game. The second anthology is called The Mirador Fantasmagoria and my werewolf story is called My New Master (published under my maiden name, Catherine Hargreaves).

Sylvia: What inspired you to write your first book? 

Catherine: I had a vampire story in mind when I was a teenager. I never wrote it down, but it was always there, replaying over and over when I was alone with my thoughts. Eventually, after harbouring it for ten years, I mentioned it in conversation to my younger sister one day. She forced me to face my fear of rejection, write it down and send it out. I am so glad she did, because my writing career is now in full swing! 

Sylvia: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Catherine: Well actually I always wanted to be an author! Some days I wanted to be a ballerina, until I discovered how much pain they put their feet through, then I changed my mind. During my teen years I wanted to be a children’s TV presenter on Nickelodeon. My other aspiration was to be a librarian, so you could see that books were always pretty important to me. 

Sylvia: Yes, I see a pattern.  Is there a message in your book that you want readers to grasp? 

Catherine: Yes. I want them to rethink their preconceived notions about the idea of love and relationships, whether they are good or bad. I am intrigued with the human condition and our propensity to act on emotion one minute, and deny it the next. It fascinates me. 

Sylvia: Any words of advice for unpublished writers? 

Catherine: Do not fear rejection. No matter whether your manuscript has been rejected by agents or publishers, there will always be an audience for your work. Get it out there, learn to use social networking to your advantage, and be involved. 

Sylvia: Yes, great advice!  Well Catherine, why should we buy your book? 

Catherine: If you like adult romance you should enjoy it, especially if you like paranormal themes. Even people who don’t tend to read paranormal romance have told me how much they enjoyed my book, because it is engaging, realistic and believable. 

Sylvia: Is there a special place that you prefer when you write? 

Catherine: Not really. Our house is tiny so I have a home computer on a desk in the corner of our dining room, or my laptop on our dining room table. With a baby and a dog it is difficult to go and sit in coffee shops or public places, because I would always be distracted. 

Sylvia: What is your POWER WORD?  Why this word?  

Catherine: My power word is ATTRACTION. We attract the kind of life we think we deserve, and don’t even think about it. If you consciously focus on achieving or receiving something, you will make it happen. It is the simple concept of Law of Attraction, which I believe in implicitly.
