Do you look forward to going to work every day? Or does your job consume your life, suck away your energy and leave you feeling unenthusiastic, unfulfilled, and unsatisfied at the end of the day?
In Living Life for Yourself, Not Your Job, Vitra Singh shares the stories of 24 people who courageously reinvented their careers in a way that worked for them. Whether they turned a hobby into a full-time job, tried various avenues until they found a passion, or were forced to figure it out when life got in the way. Their journeys prove ordinary people like you and me can change the course of our careers if we want it badly enough. While it may be easy to stay in your current job, this book inspires you to start exploring a profession that will give you a sense of purpose and joy.
You will meet people such as Alan, who left a job in finance to pursue his love of science and intends to use it to be a doctor; Barbara, who successfully climbed the ladder in various jobs for more than 30 years before getting so sick she promised herself if she was able to recover, she would pursue her dream job; and Jeffrey, who left a career in international development to follow his heart and attend culinary school.
In Living Life for Yourself, Not Your Job, you will live through the experiences of each of these individuals-their frustrations, fears, doubts, and strength as they boldly transformed the quality of their lives by refusing to settle for their 9 to 5 job.

Sylvia’s Review:

“Living Life for Yourself, Not Your Job,” is such an empowering book dripping with golden nuggets for those who desire to ‘be their own boss’ or make a career change but not quite sure what it all entails nor ready to give up their 9-5 just yet.  The author, Vitra Sing, profiles 24 people who candidly talk about their experiences. Each message is simple and from real life everyday people who share their ‘story’ with a common point to not give up on your dream, rather, take baby steps to make it a reality.

The book is very organized and broken up into themes which help the reader to learn about people with similar stories relating to that theme. For example, in the chapter, “Seizing an Opportunity to Shake up Your Career,” there are four contributors.  Collette Burnette, says, “Nine out of ten people are going to say ‘no.’ But if you get one ‘yes,’ make that YES big” … and Suzanne K. Oshima story begins with, “If you have the drive and passion, it’s going to get you through those really hard times.”

The inspiration for the book came at a time when Vitra was frustrated with going from job to job and not being fulfilled.  After much frustration, she quit that last job with no job leads. Thus, the book idea came to fruition. In preparation, she started interviewing people experiencing similar situations and did something about it!

Each contributor has a similar message, that living your life passion makes a huge positive difference in your quality of life. The book is an easy to follow guide for finding your happiness and life’s purpose. Each contributor shares his/her story and it leaves the reader with the message that you do not have to settle for a career or job you hate… rather, decide what it is you want to do and commit yourself to making it happen. That means, doing something every day to get you closer to your passion.

I highly recommend this book to those stuck in a dead end job yet have a dream and passion to do something different.  It is an inspirational yet informative ‘how to’ book.
