When we anoint the body with biblical oils we do more than address physical needs-we help the person achieve spiritual healing. What do we mean by a “biblical oil?” If we look at the Bible, there are over a thousand references to the use of incense, oils, and the act of anointing. Thirty-five plants are named by name in the scriptures. Chief among the oils referred to are frankincense, myrrh and balsam which were also considered to be the “kingly” oils fit for the King. When anointing referred to spiritual healing, it meant more than spiritual worship-it was done for restoring the body, mind and spirit to wholeness-it was for total restorative healing.

What Is Spiritual Healing?

Perhaps the better question is what is healing? It means a restoring to wholeness, to balance what is out of balance. When we are spiritually out of balance, we are not at one with our Source, with God. These “sacred fragrances” were used historically to restore the balance, to heal the sick soul, and to heal the sick body.

Let’s take for example, frankincense essential oil. It is high in monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes which are hydrocarbons that can actually cross the blood-brain barrier. These compounds can affect the hypothalamus which produces the feel-good hormones known as the endorphins and enkephlins. Frankincense is uplifting to one’s spirit to things beyond the “earthly.” It was traditionally used for spiritual purposes by Egyptians, Persians, the Israelites, and other Middle Eastern peoples for thousands of years before Christianity ever developed. For the past two thousand years, many Christian denominations have incensed their churches with frankincense because of its “spiritual” qualities of lifting us up to God.

It is interesting that just smelling the bark of the frankincense tree without even collecting its resin can be uplifting. No wonder the owners of the frankincense trees kept their locations a trade secret. Unfortunately today, many of these trees are being cut down in the name of progress as more and more buildings are put up.

If you are seeking spiritual healing and want to use a healing oil like frankincense, just remember you want a therapeutic grade oil not something you buy in the health food store which is most probably only perfume grade. You want the “real stuff” if you want spiritual healing.
